Lahaul Valley is the quiet cousin of Spiti — geographically adjacent, geologically similar, but vastly quieter in its tourism footprint. Bounded by the Pir Panjal range to the south and the Greater Himalayan range to the north, Lahaul opens a window into a high-altitude Himalayan life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Where is Lahaul Valley?
Lahaul and Spiti together form the two valleys of the combined Lahaul-Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh. While Spiti is a cold desert, Lahaul is greener — fed by glacial meltwater from the Chandra and Bhaga rivers that converge at Tandi to form the Chenab. The valley stretches from Keylong (the district headquarters) north toward the Punchkula range and east toward the Spiti border.
Gateway Villages You Must Visit
Jispa (3,200m)
Our recommended first night's stop on the Manali–Leh highway. Jispa sits on the banks of the Chandra River and is the perfect acclimatization village before pushing to higher altitudes. The Song River guesthouse run by local Tibetan families offers some of the best momos in the region.
Sissu (3,150m)
A waterfall paradise en route to Keylong. The Sissu Falls cascade dramatically into the valley and are visible from the main road — a dramatic first impression of Lahaul's dramatic topography.
Tandi (2,560m)
The sacred confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers — the two source tributaries of the Chenab. Locals consider this a shakti sthal, a place of divine feminine energy. The road from Tandi climbs dramatically into the high Lahaul interior.
Keylong (3,350m)
The administrative centre of Lahaul. Keylong has a modest market, a functioning petrol pump, and the 17th-century Kardang Monastery overlooking the town from a hilltop. Do not miss the evening prayer sessions at Kardang — the monks welcome visitors respectfully.
The High Altitude Passes
- Rohtang Pass (3,978m) — The most famous, now accessible year-round via the Atal Tunnel (built 2020). Crowded in summer, magical in winter.
- Baralacha La (4,890m) — A tri-way pass connecting Lahaul to Ladakh and Zanskar. Dramatic, remote, and high.
- Kunzum Pass (4,590m) — The gateway between Lahaul and Spiti. Opens typically in June; snow can persist well into July.
